Vi-Spring is a bed company founded in 1901 in Plymouth, in the South West of England, marketing beds made of natural materials. Part of Vi-Spring’s notability comes from being the fist bed makers to use the Marshall pocketed spring coil. By 1914 these beds were found in luxurious hotels, clubs and ocean liners, including The Queen Mary and The Titanic.
All Vi Spring beds come with a 30 year guarantee.
We have a full range of headboards and pillows to complement your new bed.

Pocket sprung beds
Pocket sprung beds are made up of hundreds or even thousands of individual small springs. The springs are not connected as with normal sprung beds so this means that the mattress can mould to the shape of your body and disturbance between two people in a bed is limited. This will give you the best support.
The springs are nested closely, by craftsmen, to give an even sleeping surface.
The number of springs and the quality of each of the springs is a big reason why these beds are regarded as the best and subsequently cost more than beds with other spring systems.
The superior support given by a pocket spring mattress needs to be combined with the correct firmness, depending on a person’s weight. In general the guidelines are:
Soft – up to 10/11 stone
Medium – up to 16 stone
Firm – up to 20 stone
These are only guidelines and everyone will have a personal opinion. However, the general principal is that the bed should hold the person level.
It can be seen in the bottom picture how the springs react in the mattress and compress more where the weight is heavier. Combined with the correct tension, this will ensure correct posture.
After the spring unit has been assembled, the next part is to add the mattress fillings. Typical fillings will be cotton felt, wool or horse hair but there are also more exotic ingredients such as cashmere, alpaca and silk. The more expensive beds will contain the best quality horse tail hair which is very springy and has good powers of recovery which means the bed will last longer and be more comfortable.
Most of the fillings used in these types of bed are natural and so breath well. This means they will regulate the body temperature well and not hold heat.
In just a few of the Hypnos beds we sell, latex is used as a filling but in conjunction with natural layers. The latex has small holes in so heat is not retained and a natural layer is always closest to the body.
The amount and type of filling will have a bearing on the price of the mattress.
Turning the mattress
Most pocket sprung beds need to be turned, especially in the first year when settlement occurs. This is when the natural fibres compress a little under our body weight and body imprints can be see.
This is not a fault and is totally normal. Sometimes people think the springs have collapsed but it is just the natural fibres losing a bit of their initial loft. Over the first year or so as the mattress is tuned, this will even out.
We offer a mattress turning service for a small extra charge. This is especially useful in the first year when the mattress needs turning more frequently.
Hypnos sell some beds with latex in the filling which do not require turning.
The divan base
Most pocket sprung beds come with a sprung base. The divan base is an integral part of the bed as a whole because the base does a large proportion of the work and so helps the mattress do its job better and last longer.
Divan bases can be coil sprung as shown in the top section of the picture or pocket sprung as shown in the lower one. Pocket sprung are standard in the higher priced beds and are optional on others.
Bases can also be solid top when there are no springs. This will make the mattress firmer. It is not the best option for a pocket sprung mattress but may be suitable in some circumstances.
There are many fabrics to choose from to personalise your bed and matching headboards are also available.
Drawers can be added to all the bases we sell.
We can supply mattresses on their own but because of the weight of the mattress, we need to advise that the base must be strong enough or the guarantee may be invalid.
Castors are normally fitted to the base but Vi Spring and Hypnos also offer feet and legs. These are especially useful if the bed is being used on a hard floor.
Bases can also be reduced in height.
Every Vi Spring and Hypnos bed benefits from hours of expert craftsmanship.
Every stage of the process requires traditional skills. The picture shows the border being hand stitched. This is the most difficult process in the manufacture of a pocket sprung bed and is only performed by the most skilled workers as getting the tension right is very important in the strength of the bed.
